Chapter 147: Trusting Grandmother, Gaining a Son
In the main courtyard of the Xiang residence, Song Ruqi touched her ear, feeling unusually warm. Who could be speaking ill of her behind her back?
“Go back and change into something more casual first. It’s early morning, and you’re going out just to buy a few little things. It’s sweet of you to be thinking of your eldest sister,” Lady Song said with a smile.
Song Ruqian, seated on the luohan bed, added, “Exactly. Hurry and freshen up. I’m waiting to eat with you when you get back.”
Song Ruqi smiled cheerfully. “Then you and Mother chat. I’ll be right back.”
After bowing to the two of them, she gracefully stepped out.
Song Ruqian looked at her mother with some emotion. “I haven’t seen her for a while, and Qi’er seems to have grown more sensible. She even knows to buy treats to make me happy.”
Lady Song smiled. “She’s been thinking of you all along. If I hadn’t stopped her from running around, she might have gone to the Gu family to stay with you. You two sisters have always been close, even before you married. It’s no wonder she cares so much for you.”
Song Ruqian felt a warmth in her heart and teased with a smile, “She also thinks of Mother.”
Lady Song looked at her slightly swollen belly and said, “I’d be grateful if she wasn’t upset with me. Is the child restless?”
Song Ruqian lowered her head, touched her belly gently, and smiled kindly. “Not at all. It’s only just over three months now. The imperial physician said the baby won’t move until four months.”
“That’s about right. In about ten days? Some babies move earlier, even at three months.”
“Mm.”
“When I heard your pregnancy was unstable, I was terrified. Your grandmother was unwell then, too. I couldn’t sleep all night, fearing something might go wrong with either of you. Thankfully, you’re both well. That’s a relief,” Lady Song said, recalling the frightening time when Song Cisheng was ill.
Song Ruqian replied, “Sorry to have worried you, Mother. You can rest assured now.”
Lady Song recalled something Song Cisheng had once said and couldn’t help but ask if she had eaten mostly meat or vegetables before conceiving.
Song Ruqian was puzzled. “Mother, you know I’ve never cared for rich meat dishes. Even after marrying into the Gu family, my meals have mostly been simple and vegetarian.”
Lady Song seemed a bit disappointed. “If that’s the case, this child might be a girl.”
Song Ruqian’s hand paused. “Why would you say that, Mother?”
“Your grandmother mentioned some things—not absolutely certain, but there’s some reasoning behind it. I’ll tell you, but don’t pass it around,” Lady Song said, relaying what Song Cisheng had said.
Song Ruqian’s face flushed deeply. “How could Grandmother say such things?”
Diet is one thing, but the bedroom matters—how one positions themselves—Grandmother was rather… particular.
“Whether it’s true or not, who knows? But believing it won’t hurt. Just take care of yourself during this pregnancy. Even if it’s a girl, it’s no problem. Girls in the Gu family never lack suitors and are cherished. For the next child, though, you’ll have to be careful and plan as Grandmother suggests,” Lady Song counseled patiently.
Song Ruqian covered her mouth, laughing softly. “Mother, when did you become so devoted to Grandmother’s words?”
In the past, her mother was always quick to refute Grandmother, thinking her unrefined and old-fashioned. Rarely had she spoken so highly of her.
Lady Song coughed lightly, lifting her teacup to mask her embarrassment. “Isn’t it said that having an elder is like having a treasure? Listening doesn’t hurt. Grandmother bore three sons, after all. Besides, it’s just about diet regulation. Whatever you eat, it’s all food. Maybe it’s right after all.”
Song Ruqian teased, “Exactly. Believe in Grandmother, and you’ll have a boy. If Mother could truly bless us with a little brother, that would be Grandmother’s greatest blessing.”
Lady Song blushed and scolded her, “Go on, you’re so disrespectful.”
Truly, the old matriarch was insistent.
