Seeing this, Zhao Na hurried forward to comfort her. Lin Qingqing stood silently to the side, showing no intention of urging them on. No matter what had happened before, Yue Tingting’s courage to take this step was worthy of encouragement. For a girl like her, Lin Qingqing was willing to offer greater tolerance and patience.

“I’m sorry~”

After a while, the two stood before her again. “Rested enough? Then let’s continue.”

Lin Qingqing brought over another zombie. This time, it still had its hands, but its legs—those capable of movement—were chopped off.

The zombie still crawled on the ground, only now there were two hands interfering.

“Don’t let it grab you. You can circle around behind it,” Lin Qingqing reminded them.

Once again, Zhao Na was the first to act. Perhaps because she had passed the first trial, this time she showed no hesitation. With a clean, crisp “pfft,” she swiftly smashed the zombie’s head.

Yue Tingting did the same.

“Very good. The next one can run,” Lin Qingqing said.

Then she chopped off the hands of the fifth zombie.

This time it was a “moving target.” Both girls exerted more effort, but eventually, they hacked the zombie into a mangled mess.

“Now the next ones are normal zombies, right? Can I rest for a bit?” Zhao Na panted.

Yue Tingting nodded quickly at that, though neither was truly exhausted—they were just extremely nervous. After all, survivors in the apocalypse, even without special abilities, had physiques much stronger than before.

Zhao Na and Yue Tingting’s strength was now comparable to an average man before the apocalypse.

“All right, take a break,” Lin Qingqing said.

She let the two sit aside to rest while she herself wielded the machete, clearing out zombies drawn by the noise.

The two girls stared blankly as Lin Qingqing dispatched each zombie with a single clean strike, muttering to themselves, “Miss Lin looks even more impressive than Uncle Chen Gang! She’s so cool!”

“I suddenly feel like I can do it again!”

“I think I can do it too.”

...

The machete was handed back to Zhao Na. This time, she faced a complete zombie.

Worried about accidents, Lin Qingqing secretly clenched an ice blade in her hand, ready to assist at any moment.

Perhaps influenced by Lin Qingqing’s earlier actions, Zhao Na’s movements were much more agile this time. She imitated Lin Qingqing’s style, dodging the zombie’s attacks and finally circling behind it to strike at its head.

Her first strike missed the vital spot, but Zhao Na steadied herself and continued circling with the zombie.

Strike after strike, by the fourth blow, the zombie was finally killed.

“Not bad, better than last time,” Lin Qingqing praised.

Zhao Na smiled happily, wiping sweat from her brow and chuckling toward Lin Qingqing.

Next was Yue Tingting’s turn. Even more nervous than before, she nearly got her hair grabbed during the struggle, and ultimately needed Lin Qingqing’s help to finish off the normal zombie.

“Your hair is a bit of a problem,” Lin Qingqing frowned, looking at Yue Tingting’s long, well-maintained black curls that reached her waist.

Hearing this, Yue Tingting reluctantly touched her hair. She had put great effort into caring for it, and it had been her pride. Even in the apocalypse, she hadn’t dared cut it off.

Her hair had originally been tied up, but it was now tousled and messy from running.

Recalling how close she had come to being pulled down by her hair, a cold sweat broke out on Yue Tingting’s forehead.

Seeing her deep in thought, Lin Qingqing said no more.

“It’s getting late. Let’s all head back and rest,” she said, handing the crystal cores she had collected to the two girls.

“No, no, I can’t take these!” Zhao Na refused without hesitation.

“These are what you killed. Of course they belong to you. Crystal cores are hard currency back at the base. Keep them safe,” Lin Qingqing insisted.

“Thank you, Miss Lin,” Zhao Na accepted the cores, expressing sincere gratitude.

“Miss Lin, thank you for teaching me too!” Yue Tingting also came back to her senses and thanked her.

“No need to thank me. This is the result of your own efforts,” Lin Qingqing waved her hand.

The three returned to their shelter, where everyone stared in surprise at the machete in Zhao Na’s hand, as if suddenly understanding something.

Chen Tao and his father wore complicated expressions, while Aunt Zhang glanced at Yue Tingting several times. Perhaps she hadn’t expected her to dare kill zombies and even broke her usual silence to ask a few questions.

After seeing them off, Lin Qingqing greeted everyone and prepared to leave.

“Miss Lin, your knife!” Zhao Na called after her.

“I gave it to you,” Lin Qingqing replied without turning around.

It was already late. After getting in the car, Lin Qingqing did not meditate but went straight into sleep.

The night passed quietly.

Early next morning, Aunt Zhang warmly invited Lin Qingqing to breakfast. This time she did not refuse but joined them with her own food.

“Miss Lin, I’ve heard from Na Na. You taught them how to kill zombies last night. Wow, you’re really amazing!” Aunt Zhang sat beside Lin Qingqing, beaming.

Though she herself was afraid to kill zombies, that didn’t stop her from admiring girls who could.

Seeing Aunt Zhang praise Lin Qingqing, Yue Xuanxuan sensed something was off and looked at his sister in surprise. He had gone to sleep early last night and only now realized she had gone out to kill zombies.

Chen Gang, as the male head of household, paid no mind to these details. He smiled politely at Aunt Zhang’s compliments and then discussed the next part of their journey with Lin Qingqing.

In his eyes, Lin Qingqing had become a partner to cooperate with, no longer just a young girl needing protection.

“Let’s stick to the route Uncle Chen planned,” they all knew the path well, and Lin Qingqing saw no issue.

The six of them boarded the car in turn, and Lin Qing followed at a steady pace.

Chen Tao’s uncle’s family home wasn’t far. They had kept in touch when the apocalypse first began to confirm each other’s survival and agreed to meet here. If Aunt Zhang hadn’t been sick and delayed them, the families would have reunited long ago.

The journey was smooth until two hours later when they encountered other survivors again.

There were four men and one woman, trapped on the second floor of a roadside bar, surrounded by twenty to thirty zombies below.

Hearing the sound of cars in the distance, the five shouted desperately:

“Help! We’re still alive!”

“Big brother, please save us!”

From afar, Chen Gang saw the horde gathered together. He had wanted to back the car up and bypass this stretch, but hearing the pleas for help made him hesitate.

He slowly stopped the car by the roadside, watching the zombies clawing frantically at the bar door, conflicted.

Aunt Zhang was firmly against rescuing them under such a swarm, her meaning clear: don’t meddle. But Chen Gang and his father couldn’t bear to watch the five trapped there.

Hearing Aunt Zhang’s loud objections from afar, Lin Qingqing remained silent, wanting to see what they would choose.

Even with Zhao Na and Yue Tingting, Chen Gang’s group barely had the strength of three fighters. The bar was open all night, so Lin Qingqing was almost certain there were more zombies inside beyond the twenty or thirty outside.

Otherwise, how could four grown men be trapped on the second floor, unable to move?
