In the city law enforcement team's detention room, where Yu Qijiu had originally been held, a man was now locked inside. Gu Feng stared at the airtight chamber, then glanced at the steel walls surrounding him. The iron chains binding him, faintly stained with old blood, sent a chill down his spine, and he shuddered involuntarily.

For days since being confined here, the captors had remained silent, and Gu Feng had come to understand their identity. It was precisely because of this that a wave of dread welled up in him. The law enforcement team—they were members of the law enforcement unit.

At this moment, his heart screamed in despair.

“Was it really necessary? Was it? I just took a book out of a bird’s nest—did that really warrant the law enforcement team’s involvement? Besides, it was so dark at night, I couldn’t even see what was written,” he muttered.

“I’m just an ordinary person! Why would the law enforcement team come after me?”

“I haven’t committed any grave offense worthy of outrage; is it really necessary to lock me up in this fortress-like cell?”

Thinking this, Gu Feng was overcome with helplessness, silently praying to himself. This place was so impenetrable that not even a fly could get in—not an exaggeration, but the truth.

Was it not a gross overreaction to detain him here for merely taking a bird’s nest?

“Just for taking a bird’s nest—does that warrant the law enforcement team’s intervention?”

His heart swelled with sorrow and indignation; he had no one to confide in, no way to seek justice.

The heavy steel door creaked open slowly, and several law enforcement officers entered.

“It’s been days, and you still won’t confess?” a tall, stern-faced young man stepped forward and asked coldly.

Gu Feng looked at the youth before him, a flicker of unease stirring within.

Before Gu Feng could answer, the man turned to another officer.

“Captain, it seems this guy is stubborn. We’ll need to use other methods.”

Wang An fixed his gaze on Gu Feng and said solemnly, “One more time—will you confess?”

The officer’s eyes locked onto Gu Feng’s, making him uncomfortable, unable to meet their gaze.

“Confess to what? You should be the one asking!” Gu Feng retorted.

“You’re not even asking, yet you want me to confess. How am I supposed to know what you want?”

Hearing that they intended to resort to other methods, Gu Feng grew anxious, speaking rapidly.

“In that case, I’ll ask you: which branch of the God-Worshiping Sect do you belong to? Which deity do you worship? Who are your accomplices? Where are you hiding now? Where are your hideouts? After obtaining the item, to whom were you planning to deliver it?”

Wang An fired a series of questions at Gu Feng, leaving him stunned.

“What God-Worshiping Sect? What accomplices…?”

What was he talking about? Was this directed at him? He didn’t understand a single word.

“Sir, I don’t understand what you’re saying!” Gu Feng protested.

“Captain, I told you this guy’s stubborn. Now he’s pretending to be crazy. Looks like we’ll have to use some methods,” one of the officers said, eyeing Gu Feng’s all-black attire.

“Look at him—just by his appearance, you can tell there’s something off,” the officer added.

“I…” Gu Feng began.

“I’m innocent!” His voice was filled with sorrow. He was utterly speechless.

“Innocent? Who do you think you’re fooling? You think saying that will make anyone believe you?” Wang An sneered.

“Don’t think that just because you’re a student, you can get away with this. Listen carefully—if you don’t come clean today, once we finish our investigation, you won’t even have a chance to speak.”

“I don’t know what you’re trying to investigate, but I really don’t know!” Gu Feng shouted.

He was utterly baffled by these officers. He had no idea what their game was.

“I truly don’t know anything about the God-Worshiping Sect. I only happened to notice someone sneaking something into the bird’s nest. Out of curiosity, I took a look. I didn’t even see what it was before you arrested me and locked me up here. This is so unjust!”

Wang An’s expression darkened upon hearing Gu Feng’s words.

“What?”

His voice suddenly rose sharply.

“What did you say?”

“You said you saw someone throw that book into the bird’s nest?”

Wang An stepped closer to Gu Feng, speaking harshly.

“Say it again!”

“I said I saw someone throw something into the bird’s nest. I was curious and just took a quick look,” Gu Feng hurriedly explained, bewildered by the man’s agitation.

Wang An’s face grew increasingly grim.

“Could it be that the God-Worshiping Sect got there first? But why would they put the item back? Could it be a ploy to throw us off, to confuse us?”

Wang An’s expression flickered unpredictably as he pondered.

“Captain, we’ve almost finished investigating this guy’s background,” someone suddenly entered and informed Wang An.

“His name is Gu Feng, from an ordinary family, no connections. He’s a student who enjoys reading novels and watching movies, especially at night. He’s very intelligent, with excellent grades, and is now a prospective freshman at Tianlan University…”

“We’ve also received word from the Celestial Master’s Mansion saying that we only need to bring the man and the scripture over. There’s no need to continue the investigation.”

The more Gu Feng heard, the colder he felt inside. They had dug into his entire ancestry, leaving no detail untouched.

Especially hearing that they had thoroughly probed into his hobbies, he wore an expression of utter despair.

“Better to lose my head or bleed than to lose my innocence!”

“Is that something to be said?” Wang An frowned deeply.

“Bring the man over; no further investigation is needed. What does this mean?”

“Captain, it seems the Celestial Master’s Mansion doesn’t plan to pursue this matter further. I find it very strange. After all, a core inheritance has been leaked, yet they seem unconcerned. Their attitude is truly baffling,” one officer remarked, clearly puzzled by the outcome.

Wang An looked at Gu Feng, lost in thought, then said,

“Our mission was to retrieve the scripture. Since we have it, and the Celestial Master’s Mansion isn’t pursuing this, we need not concern ourselves further.”

“Let’s end it here. Release the man.”

“Yes, Captain,” the others responded.

Hearing their conversation, Gu Feng finally breathed a sigh of relief, though many questions lingered in his mind.

“The Celestial Master’s Mansion?”

“Is that the same Celestial Master’s Mansion I know?”

“Could that book be connected to the Celestial Master’s Mansion?”

“Sending me there—what could they want? Are they going to blame me for merely glancing at that book? It feels like escaping one den of wolves only to enter another lair of tigers!”

Gu Feng’s heart grew heavy with worry.
