Zhou Lin watched as the little girl changed into her new clothes, her spirit renewed and radiant. He was grateful he had brought her home. Such an adorable child—not only would he teach her martial arts, but if she wished for the stars from the sky, he would pluck them for her.
“Come, let Daddy teach you!”
So, beneath the great tree stood the tall man and the small girl. Zhou Lin patiently instructed while Xiao Man diligently learned. The morning sunlight filtered through the dappled leaves, casting a warm and beautiful scene.
Dao Feng had already been brought over by the caretaker, eager to go out. [Man Zai, let’s go!]
Xiao Man stepped forward to hug him. “Got it, Brother Dao Feng!”
After breakfast, Xiao Man, Zhou Lin, and Dao Feng headed to the cemetery. Zhou Lin drove while watching the little girl sitting beside Dao Feng; she wasn’t as tall as him yet, but happily hugged his neck.
Upon arrival at the cemetery, Dao Feng immediately dashed toward the martyr’s memorial where Wang Tao was buried.
Zhou Lin lit a cigarette and poured some wine. “Brother, I didn’t get the chance to visit last time. I saved a little girl.”
Xiao Man looked devoutly at the black-and-white photo on Wang Tao’s tombstone. “Hello, Uncle Wang Tao! Daddy and Brother Dao Feng saved me. Uncle Wang Tao, don’t worry, Daddy and I will take good care of Brother Dao Feng.”
Dao Feng barked once: [Master, we will definitely help you seek revenge!]
Curious, Zhou Lin asked, “Xiao Man, what did he say?”
Xiao Man chimed brightly, “Daddy, Brother Dao Feng said to reassure Uncle Wang Tao that he will live well from now on!”
Dao Feng cocked his head and glanced at the girl: [Man Zai is smart. We must not let Captain Zhou know about our revenge plans. Last time he said if I dared to go after the culprit alone, he’d break my dog legs.]
Xiao Man widened her eyes. Daddy was such a good man; he wouldn’t be so harsh. “Daddy is just worried about you, Brother Dao Feng!”
Dao Feng barked twice: [I will use my dog life to find the culprit and avenge Master!]
Xiao Man hugged his furry head. “I know, we’ll work hard together!”
She turned to meet Zhou Lin’s puzzled gaze and quickly smiled, “Daddy, Brother Dao Feng is doing his best to adjust to retired life, and I will study hard to become a good police officer who serves the people.”
Zhou Lin nodded. After that, the two humans and one dog left the cemetery together.
The car drove far away, but Dao Feng kept his gaze fixed on the direction of the gravesite.

Xiao Man comforted him, “Brother Dao Feng, when Daddy has time, he’ll bring us to visit Uncle Wang Tao again!”
Dao Feng withdrew his gaze. [Good!]
Suddenly, Xiao Man remembered Da Huang. “Daddy, can we go to the stray animal shelter to visit Mom Da Huang?”
Zhou Lin, driving and watching the road ahead, said, “Daddy is off today. You can go wherever you want!”
“Daddy, you’re the best!” Xiao Man cheered happily.
Zhou Lin drove to the stray animal shelter, which mostly housed cats and dogs. Normally, the animals in the cages were noisy and restless, but upon seeing the majestic Dao Feng, they all became quiet and well-behaved, not daring to move.
Visitors hoping to adopt animals also looked at Dao Feng with admiration and shock.
“He’s so imposing! I really want to raise a police dog!”
Xiao Man smiled at Dao Feng. “Brother Dao Feng, look, everyone likes you! You and Daddy wait here, Xiao Man will go see Mom Da Huang first!”
Da Huang was pregnant and resting in the back yard, away from the noise.
When Xiao Man pushed open the door, Da Huang happily ran over. Xiao Man noticed her leg had healed.
Da Huang’s belly was growing large. Xiao Man circled her, “Man Zai, I’m going to be adopted soon. The family knows I’m carrying four puppies and can’t wait to take me home. I really am living the high life now, enjoying motherhood and doggy blessings.”
Xiao Man clapped happily. “Mom Da Huang, do you know their address? When you have your puppies, I’ll come visit you.”
“I can’t remember... they say pregnancy makes you forget things for three years,” Da Huang tilted her head and tapped it with a paw. “But I heard from the crows it’s an industrial park called Kelly Biotech. Many of our animals have gone there.”
Xiao Man nodded, happy for Da Huang. “I’ll remember. Mom Da Huang, you must be happy!”
Soon, a van marked with the characters “Kelly” arrived to pick up Da Huang. She was placed into a dog crate and happily taken away.
Humming a tune, Xiao Man skipped out, only to hear a white Bichon Frise whining nearby.
[Help! Help! Someone save me!]
Two boys around five or six years old were tugging at the dog—one grabbing its head, the other pulling its hind leg.
“Stop fighting! The Bichon says it hurts so much!” Xiao Man immediately intervened.
“This little dog is mine. Our dog went missing last week. It must have come to the shelter,” said the shorter, chubbier boy named Deng Hong.
The taller, thinner boy was Ren Hui. “I had a dog like this before. I saw it first and I’m going to adopt it!”
The Bichon’s dark eyes were filled with fear: [I don’t know them. I came out of Kelly Biotech. I was cloned by them…]
“What does cloned mean?” Xiao Man asked, unfamiliar with the word.
The Bichon was about to explain when Ren Hui yanked its leg, breaking a bone. [Ow... my leg’s broken... it hurts so much…]
Xiao Man stepped forward to hold the Bichon, but Ren Hui pushed her away with one hand. She fell hard onto the floor.
Dao Feng heard the commotion and ran over. He bit Ren Hui’s sleeve fiercely and barked authoritatively, standing protectively in front of Xiao Man.
[Man Zai, don’t be afraid. Brother Dao Feng is here!]
“Brother Dao Feng, save the Bichon!”
The two boys, startled by the imposing German Shepherd police dog, immediately dropped the Bichon and ran away.
Quick as a flash, Dao Feng lunged forward, gripping the Bichon’s neck gently with his mouth.
The small Bichon had never seen such a fierce police dog before and was too frightened to scream, trembling all over.
Xiao Man hugged it, stroking its furry head. “Little Bichon, don’t be afraid! Brother Dao Feng is a retired police dog. He looks fierce but has the softest heart. He’s the best big dog in the world!”
The Bichon whimpered: [Thank you for saving me. My leg hurts so much…]
“Xiao Man will take you to the vet!” She got up and headed out.
Dao Feng followed her, proud and dignified, striding forward as if still on duty, disciplined and imposing.
Just as the trio reached the front hall, the two boys returned with their parents, blocking their way.
“Stop! This police dog bit my son!” Ren Hui’s mother shouted. “Little girl, where are your adults? You need to pay for this!”
