Shen Ruizhang left with a face as dark as iron.

Jiang Yunzhu watched his figure gradually disappear, and only when he was completely out of sight did she withdraw her gaze.

She didn’t understand.

Why would the uncle who had raised her since childhood trust Zhou Qingpei so blindly?

Why would he even speak to her with such harsh words?

“Can’t bear to let go?” Shen Tingxiao suddenly spoke.

Jiang Yunzhu snapped back to reality and glanced at him. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

“Yunzhou, if you keep staring any longer, you’ll turn into one of those legendary stones that wait eternally for their husbands,” Shen Tingxiao said coldly, with a hint of displeasure. “Don’t forget, I’m your fiancé now.”

Jiang Yunzhu rolled her eyes inwardly.

It was all just a pretense anyway.

Still, since Shen Tingxiao had helped her, she didn’t complain. Instead, she poured him a glass of water and said, “Thank you.”

After a brief pause, Jiang Yunzhu grew wary. “This time, you offered to help me on your own. I didn’t ask you, so you can’t make me knit you sweaters, gloves, or hats again.”

Shen Tingxiao’s expression grew colder. “Do you think I care for those things?”

Why get angry in the middle of a conversation?

Although his reaction was odd, the meal consisted of all her favorite dishes, so Jiang Yunzhu was quite content.

After dinner, Shen Tingxiao drove her back to the hotel.

She had just gotten out of the car and hadn’t even had the chance to say goodbye before the car drove off.

Fine.

Shen Tingxiao’s temperament was truly unpredictable.

Jiang Yunzhu turned and entered the hotel. After washing up, she began working on her outline and storyboards.

In the middle of the night, the crew’s group chat suddenly exploded.

[Whoa! Who called the police? The officers took Zhou Qingpei and her assistant away!]

[Wait, wasn’t today’s incident just an accident?]

[Didn’t Shen Ruizhang invest in this drama too? Did the director call the police without warning him?]

[After all, Jiang Yunzhu is Master Shen’s girlfriend. Of course, he’d stand up for her.]

Jiang Yunzhu wasn’t foolish. She quickly understood what had happened and called Shen Tingxiao. “Master Shen, was it you who called the police?”

“Someone almost died. Reporting to the police is perfectly normal,” Shen Tingxiao replied, his voice tinged with weariness.

But to call the police over something so minor would inevitably have a big impact on the crew, especially in terms of public opinion.

Usually, investors and directors would try to resolve such matters quietly.

Unless something truly serious happened, most would never call the police over a small incident.

The only explanation was that Shen Tingxiao had exerted pressure.

“No matter what, I’m still grateful,” Jiang Yunzhu said, genuinely surprised by his intervention.

“You keep thanking me, but Jiang Yunzhu, you’re not my girlfriend—you’re my subordinate,” Shen Tingxiao said with a trace of sarcasm. “If there’s a next time, just write a thank-you letter by hand.”

Then he hung up.

Jiang Yunzhu listened to the dial tone, baffled.

What was with him?

Was it wrong to thank him?

The crew couldn’t produce any concrete evidence that Zhou Qingpei or her assistant had intended to cause harm. They insisted it was an accident.

After investigating, the police detained Zhou Qingpei’s assistant for a few days as a formality. With no solid evidence, she was released soon after.

Still, word got back home, and Zhou Qingpei’s reputation did take a hit.

But with the time difference and Shen Ruizhang’s support, negative headlines were quickly suppressed and caused little stir. Zhou Qingpei only lost a few hundred thousand followers across the major platforms.

This outcome was within Jiang Yunzhu’s expectations—it was, after all, a society governed by law.

Jiang Yunzhu reported the result to Shao Shu. “For now, the company can only do so much. Without concrete evidence, there’s nothing more we can do. I’m sorry you had to go through this.”

Shao Shu was discharged the next day, a faint scar remaining on her neck. “Don’t say that. In the past, I could never imagine anyone standing up for me. If something happened, I’d have to grit my teeth and bear it.”

That was the reality for little-known actors.

They received neither the company’s attention nor the agent’s. Unless one made it big, there was nothing to do but endure.

Jiang Yunzhu handed her a scar-removal ointment she’d had someone buy. “I heard this works well. Since you’re an artist, try not to let scars remain if you can.”

“Thank you,” Shao Shu replied, gratitude shining in her eyes.

Jiang Yunzhu thought of something. “Shao Shu, how many scenes do you have left with the crew?”

“My role isn’t as big as Sang Bai’s,” Shao Shu answered after some thought. “I’ll probably finish up in less than half a month.”

In terms of overall ability, Sang Bai was stronger than Shao Shu.

Jiang Yunzhu nodded. “Perfect. By the time I’m done with my script, you’ll be almost finished. Then you can be the lead in my film.”

“Your lead?” Shao Shu was stunned. “Yunzhu, you’re making a film?”

“I’m going to make a short film as a stepping stone to apply for further studies at a certain university. I want to be a director in the future,” Jiang Yunzhu replied.

Shao Shu sighed. “Rich people really are different from me. I’m just glad to do well as an actress, but you’re starting a company, going back to school, and becoming a director.”

Jiang Yunzhu flicked her forehead. “Once your acting career is stable, you’ll be able to branch out and do whatever you want, too.”

“That’ll be a long way off,” Shao Shu replied, discouraged. “Who knows when I’ll ever land a leading role?”

“In half a month, you’ll be starring in my film,” Jiang Yunzhu laughed, patting her shoulder.

Shao Shu’s face lit up with a brilliant smile. “Alright!”

For the next couple of weeks, Jiang Yunzhu immersed herself in her room, focusing on her short film.

When Shao Shu wrapped up her scenes with Director Shang’s crew, Jiang Yunzhu borrowed some of the crew’s equipment and began shooting her own project.

The process went smoothly. A fifteen-minute short film was completed in about a week.

With nothing left tying her to the crew, Jiang Yunzhu packed her things, only then realizing she hadn’t seen Shen Tingxiao for a while.

She wondered what he had been up to lately.

Speak of the devil.

Her phone screen lit up.

It was Shen Tingxiao calling.

Jiang Yunzhu answered.

“You’re leaving tomorrow?” Shen Tingxiao’s voice came through the line.

“Yes, I’ve finished everything I needed to do. There’s no reason to stay any longer,” Jiang Yunzhu replied.

“You still haven’t told Uncle and Auntie about us?” he asked.

Jiang Yunzhu paused and scratched her nose. “I really did forget... But when I get back, I’ll tell them right away! As for when we get married, we can pick a good day.”
