Chapter 90 Trouble Arises
Shen Ruizhang's expression stiffened for a moment. "Mother, no matter what, the child in Zhou Qingfei's womb is still a descendant of the Shen family. We can't just let her abort the child, can we?"
The old Madam Shen, hearing Shen Ruizhang utter such words on this day, was so furious she could barely contain herself.
"You disgrace! The marriage hasn't even been held yet, and you've already produced an illegitimate child? What do you expect Zhuzhu to think? She likes you so much, and this is how you treat her just because she loves you?"
Shen Ruizhang looked helpless. He had never considered asking Zhou Qingfei to terminate her pregnancy, but he also hadn't thought about bringing Zhou Qingfei into the Shen family. Still, the child was his flesh and blood, and he couldn't bear to see such a tiny life lost.
"Mother..."
"Don't call me mother! You'll be the death of me!"
Jiang Yunzhou, noticing that the old Madam Shen seemed to be struggling to breathe, hurriedly soothed her, gently rubbing her chest.
"Grandmother, breathe, take slow breaths. Don't worry."
After calming her, Jiang Yunzhou felt a surge of anger. Why couldn't Shen Ruizhang just behave and be obedient in front of the old Madam?
"Uncle, must you make things so embarrassing?"
Shen Ruizhang opened his mouth, then spoke in a low voice, "Zhuzhu, you should be able to understand me."
Jiang Yunzhou forced a smile, her face icy, lips curled in a mock grin. "Of course I can understand you, Uncle. Grandmother, let’s not scold him any further."
The old Madam Shen pressed her lips together, her expression still far from pleasant.
Shen Ruizhang, seeing her expression, hurriedly said, "Mother, rest assured, I won't have any further contact with Zhou Qingfei. But the child is innocent; we can't just stand by and watch it disappear. That would be too cruel."
The old Madam Shen replied coldly, "It's merely an embryo. It’s not even a child yet, not a life. Only after it’s born can you talk of cruelty!"
Shen Ruizhang sighed, realizing he could not persuade her further, and let the matter drop.
"Enough, Mother. Let’s not talk about unhappy things. Today is my wedding day with Zhuzhu; we should be celebrating."
The old Madam Shen snorted. "What you’ve done—how can anyone be happy? The only joy today is that Zhuzhu agreed to marry you. Nothing else is worth celebrating!"
Shen Ruizhang awkwardly touched his nose, glancing toward Jiang Yunzhou.
Jiang Yunzhou, pretending not to notice, took the old Madam’s hand and changed the subject.
She didn’t want someone like Zhou Qingfei to ruin her grandmother’s mood.
Soon, Jiang Yunzhou and Shen Ruizhang stood before the priest.
The priest recited the vows.
"Mr. Shen Ruizhang, do you take Miss Jiang Yunzhou as your wife, to cherish her for a lifetime?"
Just as Shen Ruizhang was about to speak, suddenly someone burst in, interrupting him.
"Mr. Shen, Miss Zhou is feeling unwell and has fainted. Please come quickly!"
Jiang Yunzhou narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing the man who had rushed up to them.
His face was unfamiliar.
How had someone managed to get in?
Jiang Yunzhou turned to Shen Ruizhang. "Uncle, what are you thinking?"
Shen Ruizhang hesitated. "Let me go check."
Jiang Yunzhou spoke unhurriedly, "He’s lying. Miss Zhou is under my people’s watch. If anything had happened, they would have notified me. I don’t know this man; he’s obviously a fraud."
"The wedding is ongoing—don’t waste time on false reports. Grandmother is watching from below."
Shen Ruizhang paused, his gaze shifting to the old Madam Shen seated among the guests.
The old Madam’s face was dark. She murmured something to the butler beside her, who immediately left.
Soon, bodyguards surrounded the intruder.
The man suddenly pulled a gun from his pocket and fired at Jiang Yunzhou.
"Zhuzhu!"
Shen Tingxiao’s pupils contracted sharply, and he rushed toward the stage without hesitation.
When the intruder drew his weapon, Shen Ruizhang grabbed Jiang Yunzhou and pulled her aside, narrowly avoiding the bullet.
Jiang Yunzhou was startled; she hadn’t expected anyone to bring a firearm. Where on earth had Zhou Qingfei found such a person?
Seeing he’d missed, the man snarled, spitting on the floor.
"Damn, quick on your feet!"
He raised his gun again, not bothering to aim, and fired another shot at Jiang Yunzhou. The bodyguards reacted, charging at him. The man, clearly experienced, dodged and even shot at a bodyguard.
Shen Tingxiao, seeing that Jiang Yunzhou was protected by Shen Ruizhang, turned his attention to the man causing the chaos.
Jiang Yunzhou, noticing Shen Tingxiao’s movements, called out, "Shen Tingxiao, don’t do anything reckless!"
While shielding Jiang Yunzhou, Shen Ruizhang took a shot to the arm, blood flowing freely.
Yet in that moment, Jiang Yunzhou’s concern was still for Shen Tingxiao, making Shen Ruizhang feel even more unsettled.
Still, he said, "Zhuzhu, let’s hide for now. That man must be an escaped convict, only someone with nothing to lose would dare shoot so brazenly."
Such boldness usually belonged to those on death row, indifferent to their own fate.
Jiang Yunzhou gritted her teeth. "Don’t worry about me—get Grandmother to safety!"
She knew the man’s target was herself, and dared not approach the old Madam. If anything happened to her grandmother, she would never forgive herself.
Zhou Qingfei! You’d better have nothing to do with this.
Shen Ruizhang nodded and quickly went to the old Madam’s side.
When the shots rang out, guests scattered in panic.
Nearly everyone attending the wedding was nobility, and naturally valued their lives above all.
Jiang Yunzhou saw Shen Tingxiao fighting the assailant, and shouted at the bodyguards, "Don’t just stand there—help him!"
The bodyguards needed no prompting and rushed forward.
The man was quickly subdued.
But he was unafraid, grinning as if proud of his handiwork.
Shen Tingxiao’s face was grim as he balled his fist and struck the man’s face.
"Who sent you?"
The man lost a tooth, but said nothing, just kept smiling.
Jiang Yunzhou spoke calmly, "Call the police. I’m going to check on Zhou Qingfei."
With that, she strode outside, but Shen Tingxiao caught her hand. "Check what? Didn’t your people say she’s fine? It’s dangerous—don’t go anywhere!"
Jiang Yunzhou shook her head. "No, I need to see if Zhou Qingfei is really alright!"
