Chapter 142: Have You Come to Seek Justice for Me?
In the real world, money really is a master key sometimes.
What a small-time lawyer like her could not accomplish, sending a young master from a powerful family such as Ye Zehong to handle it was effortless.
The luxury car came to a smooth stop at the entrance. The moment Ye Zehong stepped out, he drew the attention of quite a few people.
The staff member recognized Ye Zehong’s distinguished identity at a glance and immediately straightened his back.
Seeing this, Lu Yao secretly smiled in satisfaction.
Then she flashed Ye Zehong a brilliant, eight-toothed smile, warmly hooked her arm through his, and raised her voice in a coy tone. “Darling, what brings you here? I told you I could handle it myself.”
Ye Zehong lowered his eyes to look at her affected display. He wanted to laugh, but did not dare make a sound, and could only force himself to hold it in.
He lifted an arm around her shoulders and bent down to kiss her forehead.
Then he cast a cold, menacing look at the staff member and asked, “Were you giving my girlfriend a hard time?”
The staff member’s face fell. How could he have known that this mere little lawyer was the girlfriend of the heir to the Ye family?
Had he known sooner, he would never have deliberately made things difficult for Lu Yao.
Lu Yao stepped in to smooth things over, smiling as she shook her head. “Darling, you misunderstood. This gentleman wasn’t giving me a hard time at all. He was only following procedure. He was simply afraid of offending someone powerful. I completely understand how he feels. I’ve encountered plenty of helpless situations like this in the workplace, where people are bullied by those with power.”
The staff member looked at Lu Yao gratefully, and his anxious heart eased slightly.
Ye Zehong gave a faint scoff, unable to keep from admiring how tactful his little woman was.
“Mr. Ye, if your girlfriend wants to see Fang Xiaoya, we need to seek approval from our superiors. We’re only minor staff and can’t make that decision. We wouldn’t dare violate the regulations.” The staff member pointed them in the right direction, and Lu Yao and Ye Zehong did not press the matter further.
Ye Zehong told Shen Yang to take care of it. In less than ten minutes, the staff member appeared again and respectfully led Ye Zehong and Lu Yao to the interrogation room.
The moment Lu Yao entered, she saw the young woman sitting in the interrogation chair.
The girl’s long hair hung loose in uneven strands, as though someone had hacked at it with scissors. Wisps covered half her face. She kept her head bowed, staring at her hands locked in handcuffs as she sobbed softly.
Lu Yao’s brows drew together slightly. She turned to Ye Zehong and said quietly, “Wait outside. I want to speak with her alone for a while.”
Ye Zehong glanced at Fang Xiaoya, clearly uneasy.
Lu Yao had no choice but to physically push him out.
The door closed once more.
Only then did Fang Xiaoya slowly raise her head. Tears streamed down her face as she asked, “Are you the lawyer who came to clear my name?”
Lu Yao saw the hope in Fang Xiaoya’s eyes.
Her heart softened at once.
She sat down at the interrogation table, took out a notebook, clicked her pen, and asked gently, “You attacked Song Yanqing because she said something terribly hurtful to you, didn’t you? Or did she do something unforgivable to you?”
Fang Xiaoya nodded woodenly. As the cruel things Song Yanqing had done to her resurfaced in her mind, tears spilled from her eyes.
Lu Yao spoke with compassion. “I believe you’re innocent. If you’re willing to trust me, you can tell me everything you’ve been through.”
Fang Xiaoya tried to raise her hand to wipe away her tears, only to realize that it was shackled to the interrogation chair. All she could do was sniff hard.
Choking back sobs, she asked, “If I tell you everything, can you help me obtain justice and stand up to Song Yanqing’s family?”
Just before they had entered, Ye Zehong had briefly told her about Song Yanqing.
Although the Song family was not one of the Four Great Families, its ancestors had all possessed powerful revolutionary connections, and its influence was no weaker than the Ye family’s.
Even Ye Yingtang had to show the head of the Song family a measure of respect.
They truly were not easy to deal with.
Her hesitation made Fang Xiaoya mistakenly believe that she had lost her nerve.
Fang Xiaoya let out a cold laugh. “Heh. I knew it.”
