Chapter 60: The Tower Demolition Mission

Today marks Bai Mu's second submission to the "Bounty Daily." His previous article was unexpectedly approved and received tremendous feedback, even garnering generous tips from readers, though Bai Mu had yet to claim them.
The channel for submission is exceptionally secretive—only S-ranked mercenary ninja know about it, connecting through an undercover informant in the capital of the Land of Grass where the currency is exchanged. With such a hidden route, this article might appear on the front page next time.
Onoki is certainly not one to tolerate losses. By the fifth day of their stationing, he eagerly issued combat orders, wringing every bit of commission to its fullest.
"Eliminate Konoha’s main watchtower."
Of course, this wasn’t a task assigned to a single mercenary squad but rather to the entire Iwa contingent. Bai Mu’s team would act as a specialized division, striking deep into Konoha’s rear, serving as the most dangerous spearhead.
This was a necessary operation before launching a full-scale assault. Intelligence must not leak, lest Konoha prepares in advance.
Bai Mu glanced at the mission scroll. The information didn’t even specify the location of the watchtower, nor the number of main towers. All he knew, based on the conventions of past wars, was that there should be several such towers overseeing the entire battlefield.
It had to be admitted that Konoha’s information security was impeccable—or perhaps Iwa simply neglected espionage.
"Brother Huang Tu, we're being sent out with so little intelligence. It's hard to manage..." Bai Mu sighed, never expecting that even upon arriving in the world of the Hokage, he couldn’t escape the fate of tearing down towers.
He had already asked A Fei about it. Even White Zetsu wouldn’t dare enter this battlefield—dozens of Byakugan eyes were scanning overhead, and since their opponents were Iwa, they didn’t let even several meters beneath the ground go unchecked. Not even the Earth Floating Technique could evade the Byakugan’s gaze.
"Actually, we do have some clues. Based on previous experience, Konoha usually sets up two main watchtowers. However, since our offensives have repeatedly been thwarted—every large-scale operation intercepted—our staff has analyzed that Konoha must have erected at least four main towers, perhaps even more, to achieve such results."
Huang Tu tapped the map a few times and continued, "Assuming there are four towers, Konoha would never place them together. Instead, they'd be arranged in a crisscross pattern with no blind spots. Recently, our staff, using records from past missions and rigorous data analysis, have deduced sixteen possible locations. Our job is to go to these sixteen points, scout, or demolish them!"
"Ah... Having definite targets is better than searching blindly. But surely we aren't expected to tear down towers with just our two hundred or so men? The main watchtowers must be heavily defended, right?" Bai Mu asked.
"Of course not! Our Iwa forces will move out together. We're only responsible for four of these points." Huang Tu circled several spots on the map—only the ones assigned to them—without revealing intelligence about the others.
He was no fool and did not place absolute trust in Bai Mu.
"Another problem—since they’re towers, they must at least be built of stone, right? How are we supposed to demolish them?" Bai Mu recalled saving Guy, coming across a small watchtower that had been dismantled. Though it was made of wood, it seemed extremely sturdy.
For the Iwa shinobi masters of Earth Release, it might be easy. But for this ragtag group of rogue ninja, who didn’t even have explosive tags, what would they use to tear down towers?
"Correct. We demolished a main watchtower back in the Second War. Here are the reconstructed blueprints of the tower at that time—there might be some changes, but not too many. The main structure is made of adamantite rock. Ordinary Earth Release jutsu can’t damage it. Even for me, it would take at least five to ten minutes to tear it down." Huang Tu unrolled another scroll—a genuine anatomical diagram of the watchtower.
"My goodness, it really has a cannon on top!" Bai Mu pulled at the corner of his mouth, pointing to the weapon structure at the summit.
"That’s a ballista from the Second War, driven by bowstrings—extremely powerful. With Hyuga clan members aiming, even hiding behind an Earth Flow Wall, you'd be pierced by one shot. Its only weakness is a slow firing rate." Huang Tu’s expression turned grave.
"The Second War... So after more than a decade, the weapons atop must be even more advanced now?" Bai Mu felt less a hero demolishing towers and more a foot soldier braving fire.
"We could gamble that Konoha’s technology hasn’t advanced in ten years," Huang Tu joked, surprisingly relaxed.
"You might as well say there are twenty monkeys living up there, throwing stones down at us!"
The Land of Fire has always been the fastest in technological development—big cities already have television. Hoping their weapons haven’t been upgraded is riskier than betting on their cannons jamming.
"Can I ask, how many died back then to tear down that tower?" Bai Mu cautiously pointed at the blueprint.
"...Two thousand," Huang Tu answered, his face heavy.
"Damn! Isn’t this just suicide?" Bai Mu tossed the scroll aside, surrendering outright.
"Listen to me—the situation is different now. Back then, we used fuel drip tactics—both sides fought around that tower for seven days and nights, which caused the huge casualties." Huang Tu explained:
"This time, we’ll strike with lightning speed—destroy the watchtower before Konoha’s reinforcements arrive. We must never let the battle devolve into the same stalemate."
"You still haven’t said how we’re supposed to tear it down—there aren’t many among us skilled in Earth Release." Bai Mu pressed.
"That’s why I brought these." Huang Tu pointed outside at two large crates.
The bandit-like rogue ninja were already treating them as treasures, tearing them open to reveal piles of milky-white dough-like material...
If Bai Mu wasn’t mistaken, this must be Deidara’s explosive clay!
A crowd was kneading the explosive clay, exclaiming over its texture; A Fei even scooped some out to blow up like a balloon.
"This is our Land of Earth’s specialty explosive clay—certain minerals processed through secret techniques, possessing immense destructive power. Our demolition squads are famous throughout the shinobi world thanks to this clay," Huang Tu said. It was no secret—it was a well-known specialty, and even if others knew, they couldn’t replicate it.
Ordinary demolition squad members only utilized the explosive properties of the clay, while Deidara’s clan had the unique ability to animate it, creating explosive beasts with even greater power.
"So... there won’t be any problems with them playing around like that?" Bai Mu pointed to the group of foolish children outside, sculpting clay.
"Don’t worry—the explosive clay only detonates when chakra is infused. Skilled demolition experts can precisely control the timing. Before chakra is injected, it’s safe and stable... Oh damn!"
A Fei was injecting chakra into a starfish-shaped lump of explosive clay.
"Earth Release: Earth Prison!" Huang Tu instantly moved, trapping the clay starfish in an earthen cage.
Boom! The entire city shook.
