Chapter 125: The Abandoned Ruined City
"Where... where am I?" Blinking open heavy eyes, I saw a ragged piece of metal—though calling it a piece of metal was generous; it was dented, uneven, and entirely unrecognizable. However, noticing the shattered glass shards connected to the other end, I gathered it must have been the roof of a car.
"How did I end up here? Right, the Imperial-level Evil God... I'm still alive." As my thoughts gradually cleared, Wen Hui began to recall what had happened. She had been frozen by the Imperial-level Evil God, completely unable to resist, and remembered nothing after that until this moment.
"Xiao Yuan? Xiao Yuan, wake up! Xiao Yuan." My mind racing, I sat up nervously to survey the surroundings.
Outside the window lay a landscape of ruins, and in the driver's seat beside me, Zhuang Xiaoyuan lay motionless. Seeing her eyes tightly closed, I called out to her and gently patted her shoulder, but she didn't respond at all.
"What's happening? She's breathing, but she's so hot." My inability to wake her caused me great anxiety. Finding that she was still breathing brought a moment of relief, but the temperature of her breath was highly abnormal.
"She has a fever... What do I do? I remember the car had medical supplies." Feeling the scorching heat of her breath, I touched her forehead; it was burning. This wasn't the heat of a common cold—it far exceeded human limits, easily reaching forty or fifty degrees Celsius.
Discovering her condition, I scrambled out of the car, rushing toward the cargo container at the back. But after a few steps, I stopped. The car wasn't just a wreck; the cargo box was gone. I suddenly remembered that when we were attacked by the Burrowing-level Demon, the cargo cabin had been detached and abandoned.
"Damn, what now?" All our medical supplies were in that box. Where could I find fever medication? At this temperature, even a God-Armored Warrior wouldn't survive, and Zhuang Xiaoyuan was no favored child of the Fire God.
Racking my brain, I scanned the environment. It was a ruin, dotted with half-collapsed buildings. This was likely an abandoned city. Given the unfamiliar urban planning, it certainly wasn't Maple City, where we had grown up.
"Right, a ruin. If it's an abandoned city, there must be hospitals or clinics. There's bound to be medicine there. I hope the people who evacuated didn't take everything." A flicker of hope ignited in my eyes. Even if the city was abandoned decades ago and the medicine was expired, it was better than sitting here helpless.
"An abandoned city—I don't know if there are any demons left. I can't leave you here alone, Xiao Yuan. Hang on, we're going to the hospital together." I circled to the driver's side, ripped off the half-hanging door, and scooped Zhuang Xiaoyuan up in a princess carry. Feeling the searing heat radiating from her, my heart was filled with anxiety.
"Wind, dance for me." Zhuang Xiaoyuan's condition couldn't wait; every minute might have dire consequences. Without worrying about whether the city was safe or scouting for dangerous creatures, I directly manipulated the wind to propel me toward a straight road. Perhaps it was my imagination, but controlling the wind felt easier and smoother than ever before.
"Here... it's just a small clinic. I hope there's something left." Following a half-broken signpost found at an intersection, I located a small medical clinic and kicked the door open with force. The iron door flew inward, crashing to the ground and kicking up a cloud of dust.
Stepping inside, I noticed the thick layer of dust covering the floor and felt my guard drop slightly. The dust was undisturbed, with not a single mark on it—not even a mouse print. That meant no dangerous creatures had been here for a long time.
I kicked over a bench, shaking off most of the dust, and carefully laid Zhuang Xiaoyuan down. Feeling her temperature rising, I grew more frantic and hurried toward the counter. Small clinics usually kept common drugs nearby; fever reducers were definitely essentials.
"Found it." After quickly flipping through several drawers, I finally found a box labeled "Fever Reducer." There was no time to check for expiration dates; if these were expired, there wouldn't be anything better anyway.
Inside the box lay a manual injector and several vials of liquid medicine. Seeing the injector, I let out a long sigh of relief. In her current state, oral medication wouldn't be effective, and she was too unconscious to swallow it anyway—an injection was perfect.
I loaded the medicine into the injector and walked back to Zhuang Xiaoyuan. I lifted her arm, pressed the smooth tip of the injector against her skin, and pressed the button. The liquid medicine turned into a mist and flowed into her body.
I don't know if I was seeing things, but after the injection, her tightly furrowed brows seemed to relax slightly. I touched her forehead again; the temperature had dropped a little. I didn't know if it was the medicine or if she was stabilizing.
Her cooling temperature eased my mind, but noticing the dusty floor and equipment, I frowned. I walked out of the clinic, remembering I had seen a water bucket and a faucet outside. I hoped this abandoned city still had tap water.
A few minutes later, I returned with two buckets of water. I placed one beside her, soaked a clean rag, and placed it on her forehead. It might not do much, but it would at least alleviate some of her suffering.
After settling her in, I rolled up my sleeves and began to wipe down the clinic. Xiao Yuan was at her weakest, and I couldn't let the dust affect her breathing. Although I knew nothing about cooking, I could at least clean.
