The person had vanished.
When Xu Wen received the call, he hurriedly brought his men to get Xu Ze out. His own master was taken away right under his nose, and he had no idea—this was a grave dereliction of duty. Anxious and frantic, Xu Wen had already made a phone call, but the North District responded that there was no one named Ye Feng in their custody. There was no need to ask further; someone must have taken him in for private punishment. Xu Wen had never seen Ye Feng's skills, and if he were to be beaten, things could get messy.
Zhao Nie, the director of the North District precinct, had always been a timid man. When he first received the call from the newly appointed South District director, Xu Wen, he didn’t think much of it. But when Xu Wen explained Ye Feng’s identity, Zhao Nie realized the situation was dire.
Afraid to delay, Zhao Nie immediately ran to Su Fu’s office, kicked the door open, and shouted angrily, “Su Fu, where are you? Come out, now!”
Hearing Zhao Nie’s voice, Su Fu quickly stood up and approached, smiling, “Director Zhao, what brings you here in person? If something’s wrong, you could have just called.”
“Su Fu, let me ask you—tell me honestly, did you arrest anyone named Ye Feng?” Zhao Nie asked urgently. He knew exactly what his subordinates were capable of; if he was late, it would all be over.
Su Fu was momentarily stunned. After thinking it over and confirming he hadn’t arrested Ye Feng, he quickly replied, “Director Zhao, no, really, no. There’s no one named Ye Feng among those brought in today—really, none!”
“No?” Zhao Nie, seeing Su Fu’s genuine expression, was momentarily perplexed, then shouted angrily, “How is that possible! Director Xu himself called, asked me where Ye Feng was, and he was absolutely certain! If you didn’t arrest him, who did?”
Su Fu was confused. He knew his side best and was about to say it might be a misunderstanding when one of his men, who had just been reporting to him, interjected, “Director Zhao, Captain Su—it seems that some of Captain Wang’s men brought someone in today, took him straight to the interrogation room. Not sure if that’s the person you’re looking for…”
“What!” Both Su Fu and Zhao Nie were shocked. They exchanged a glance and quickly ran toward the interrogation room. They knew exactly what kind of person Wang Bazhua was—if there wasn’t a connection, he would have gotten rid of this troublemaker already. Wang Bazhua was the most brutal in the entire police force, completely lawless.
Fortunately, Wang Bazhua was careful; every time he did something shady, he would investigate first. But this time, things had escalated beyond expectation. If this went wrong, the whole precinct could be ruined. Su Fu and Zhao Nie cursed Wang Bazhua as they ran.
Despite his corpulent figure, Zhao Nie ran surprisingly fast, even leaving Su Fu behind. He rushed to the interrogation room, not even pausing to catch his breath, and pounded on the door fiercely.
After only two knocks, Zhao Nie heard muffled thuds from inside, as if something was being struck. His face turned pale, and he thought, “This is bad… Wang Bazhua is a real troublemaker…”
He braced himself and kicked the door hard twice, shouting angrily, “Wang Bazhua, open the damn door!”
Seeing Zhao Nie’s face turn ghostly pale and hearing the screams from inside, Su Fu was also terrified. He hadn’t known what Ye Feng’s identity was—perhaps some big shot’s offspring. Now, seeing Zhao Nie’s reaction, he realized it wasn’t just possible, but certain! He was definitely in trouble, and he cursed Wang Bazhua silently.
When the door still wasn’t opened, Zhao Nie and Su Fu began kicking it together. After a few blows, the door finally gave way. Zhao Nie rushed in, anxiously scanning the room, only to see a handsome young man standing by the door, looking a bit embarrassed, yet with a faint smile.
In front of him, Wang Bazhua was covered in blood, his nose continuously bleeding and clearly broken, his eyes swollen and bruised. He looked pitiful. Worse yet, his hand holding the police baton was twisted, likely fractured, and his right leg also looked bent. Even if he recovered, Wang Bazhua would be crippled.
Seeing Zhao Nie enter, Wang Bazhua struggled to stand, but with his broken limbs he couldn’t manage. He could only shout, “Director… Director Zhao, this kid assaulted an officer… assaulted an officer…” His broken nose made his speech odd.
Seeing the handsome youth completely unscathed, Zhao Nie breathed a huge sigh of relief. Now, seeing this fool accusing someone of assaulting an officer, Zhao Nie’s anger flared. He kicked Wang Bazhua hard, sending him rolling to the wall.
Wang Bazhua, enduring the pain, managed with one hand to prop himself up, thinking his savior had arrived—only to be kicked again, this time into unconsciousness.
“Su Fu, cuff this guy and take him away… we’ll deal with him later…” With the formalities done, and seeing Su Fu begin to restrain the man, Zhao Nie finally turned, his face plastered with a smile. He looked at Ye Feng, who was still smiling faintly, and quickly said with a forced laugh, “You must be Mr. Ye Feng, are you alright?”
Ye Feng picked up his seized phone, and with Director Zhao’s escort, walked out of the North District precinct. Outside, Ye Feng saw a familiar car—it was Luo Ming’s.
Just as he wondered, a mischievous voice sounded, “Surprised? I just happened to call Luo Ming as well.”
Watching Ye Feng get into Luo Ming’s Hummer and drive away, Director Zhao’s once enthusiastic smile faded, replaced by a sigh as he shook his head. He had utterly lost confidence in his prospects.
In the car, Luo Ming asked, “Ye Feng… are you alright?”
“I’m fine…” Ye Feng smiled and shook his head, “Really, I’m fine…”
“Who did you provoke this time? You’re at the police station every other day for tea.” Luo Ming asked, puzzled.
“I don’t know myself. I haven’t offended anyone lately.” Ye Feng didn’t plan to tell Luo Ming; he intended to handle it himself.
Just then, Ye Feng answered Xu Wen’s call, assured him he was fine, and said they’d talk in a few days before hanging up.
