62. An Astonishing Background
Taking advantage of the fact that no one was around, Ye Feng quietly slipped back home. He first changed his clothes and took a shower, only to find a bruise under his arm. Although he had launched a sneak attack earlier, he was still struck hard a few times by Xiao Hei. This made Ye Feng realize that he was far from invincible; even dealing with an ordinary bodyguard had taken so much effort. What did his current strength amount to, really?
No sooner had he finished his shower and lain down than he received a call from Xiao Feng. The timing surprised Ye Feng, as Xiao Feng rarely called at this hour. Still, despite his curiosity, Ye Feng answered the phone.
“Ye Feng, are you asleep?” Xiao Feng’s voice sounded weary.
“Brother Xiao, I just woke up. Is something wrong this late?” Ye Feng was genuinely puzzled; he had no idea that Xiao Qiang had ignored Xiao Feng’s warning and ended up getting caught.
“Ye Feng, do you know anyone at the city bureau?” There was a hint of hope in Xiao Feng’s voice.
“Brother Xiao, just say what you have to say.” Ye Feng’s confusion deepened.
“It’s like this, Ye Feng. After you told me last time, I called my brother directly, but he didn’t take my words seriously and got caught red-handed. Now they want me to go back and take charge of things.”
“So you want me to see if he can be released?” Ye Feng asked.
“Yes, Ye Feng. You know that managing a syndicate was never my ambition, nor am I any good at it. I really hope you can help me.” It seemed Xiao Feng had tried everything he could over the past few days, and Ye Feng was his last hope.
“What was your brother arrested for?” Although Ye Feng didn’t really want to get involved, Xiao Feng was a friend. If he could help, he would.
“He was caught at the scene of a drug robbery.”
“How much drugs were involved?”
“Supposedly five hundred kilograms, but I’m not certain. Everyone at the scene was taken in.”
“What! Five hundred kilograms! That’s enough for hundreds of executions. He really outdid himself! Wait for my news, I’ll ask around and get back to you tomorrow. But honestly, don’t get your hopes up. This is a major crackdown, even central authorities are involved.”
“Whatever the outcome, thank you.”
Ye Feng had already known what the answer would be before making the call. As Xu Wen’s stepping stone for promotion, there was no way Xiao Qiang would be released—he was lucky just not to be executed. Even if it were possible, Ye Feng wouldn’t persuade Xu Wen to let him go. Xiao Qiang was ruthless and unscrupulous; having such a kingpin in Haifeng City was hardly a blessing for its people. Xiao Feng, on the other hand, was kind-hearted. In his previous life, he had cleaned up the city’s underworld, making Haifeng much safer than before.
After Ye Feng called, Xiao Qiang resigned himself to his fate, and there was nothing more Ye Feng could say.
The next morning, after washing up, Ye Feng drove his Maserati to school, turning heads all the way. Arriving at the dormitory, he saw Third Brother, Huang Luan, stepping out of a brand-new BMW. The moment Huang Luan saw Ye Feng, he was stunned. Last semester, the group had compared backgrounds and concluded that Ye Feng came from the most modest family.
“Hey, did you rob a bank or land yourself a rich lady? You’re driving this car now?” Huang Luan’s words were sharp, but Ye Feng noticed there wasn’t the slightest envy in his eyes.
“Not at all, it’s a friend’s gift. What, am I supposed to hide it away at home?” Ye Feng joked.
“The others are already upstairs, let’s go up too.” Huang Luan dragged Ye Feng along.
“Ye Feng, your friend’s family is really something,” a sly voice echoed in Ye Feng’s mind.
“How impressive could they be? Can they compare to the Luo family?” Ye Feng replied indifferently.
“The Luo family is nothing compared to the Huang family!”
“You don’t mean that Huang family, do you?”
“The very same—the Minnan Huang family, and he’s their sole heir!”
“That’s impossible! Why would he be here in Haifeng for college, and studying computer science at that?” Ye Feng found it hard to believe.
“That’s the fun part—he made a bet with a few other young scions from Minnan. It’s a complicated story. I’ll just input that memory into your mind directly.”
As soon as the voice fell silent, Ye Feng felt a new memory surface. He saw the scene where Huang Luan made that bet with the young heirs. “So that’s how it is,” he murmured.
By now, Ye Feng had entered the room. The eldest and second brothers had just arrived and were chatting inside.
The four of them were delighted to reunite, laughing and joking until noon. During this time, Ye Feng suffered two more shocks—those concerning the backgrounds of Wu Tian and Qin Qiong.
According to the memories the voice had read, Wu Tian was the heir of the Wu family in Yanjing, a true third-generation red elite, with considerable influence in the capital. He was sent to Haifeng University by his father for training.
As for Qin Qiong, it was even more astonishing—he was from the Qin family of the Northwest Military District, veritable local overlords. Qin Qiong came to Haifeng simply to escape boredom at home.
These three probably had some inkling about each other’s backgrounds, but they were genuine friends. Only Ye Feng remained in the dark, though the voice assured him their friendship was sincere.
When noon came, it was naturally time to eat. The four brothers, reunited at last, decided to celebrate with a lavish meal. After dining at Heaven on Earth, they headed straight to the Beehive KTV to sing.
The four sang happily without calling for any hostesses, enjoying themselves immensely. But the merriment didn’t last long. Ye Feng suddenly received a message from the voice—Amy was in trouble in room 2016.
At those words, Ye Feng couldn’t sit still. He dashed out of the private room, leaving the other three stunned. Realizing something was wrong, they quickly followed.
Ye Feng rushed to room 2016 and found the door locked from the inside. He kicked it hard.
With a loud bang, the door shuddered and flew open. The commotion was deafening, but most people inside barely reacted—they were frantically swaying, clearly high on drugs. Only a few who hadn’t taken any yet responded, standing up and approaching Ye Feng with hostility.
“Who the hell are you? Can’t you see this place is taken? Got a death wish?” The lead was a twenty-something with dyed yellow hair, his breath reeking of alcohol and making Ye Feng nauseous. As he spoke, he prepared to attack.
Ye Feng ignored them entirely; his eyes were searching for Amy. Soon he spotted her lying on the sofa—something was clearly wrong. She seemed unconscious, while a man beside her was about to undress her.
