Kyle pondered Black Dragon’s question for a long time but ultimately couldn’t come up with a satisfactory answer. He even grew somewhat frustrated, suspecting that Black Dragon was deliberately trying to trap him with his words and unsettle his mindset.

“I only want you to face the problems honestly and objectively,” Black Dragon said earnestly. “It’s just a pity that you clearly lack such a quality.”

“...”

Kyle felt stumped but refused to be duped any further. He bluntly declared that if Black Dragon didn’t speak in magical language, he would refuse to answer any questions.

“Very well...”

Black Dragon feigned helplessness. “I can use magical language, but you must answer a few questions first.”

“...”

Kyle remained silent, merely giving Black Dragon a look that conveyed the message for him to understand on his own.

“If you don’t speak, I’ll take that as consent.”

Black Dragon had the staff fetch a scroll that granted comprehension of the Elvish tongue—an advanced magical language—and at last, they delved into the matter at hand.

“As agreed earlier, before discussing anything, you must answer a few questions.”

Black Dragon spoke calmly but with undeniable authority. The Elvish comprehension scroll was quite precious, costing at least hundreds of thousands of gold coins from the Night Elves.

“One question for one question!”

Kyle had already made up his mind and proposed this arrangement.

“Fine.”

Black Dragon considered briefly before agreeing. This was a rare opportunity, and he didn’t want to waste time quarreling with Kyle. It was more important to extract the truth first.

“Before that, you need to swear an oath before a deity to guarantee your answers will be truthful!”

Kyle continued.

“Huh... You sure have a lot of demands!”

Black Dragon was displeased. He kept a strict mental boundary: never swear an oath before any deity.

“If you don’t, how can I confirm your answers are true?”

While communicating with Black Dragon in Elvish, Kyle’s composure noticeably steadied, and his logic became clearer. It seemed he harbored great suspicion toward the people of Xia Kingdom, fearing his words might be eavesdropped upon.

“That’s reasonable...”

Huang Ze found Kyle’s concerns not without merit and said, “So which deity do you plan to take as a witness? Just so you know, your own Light God is definitely out of the question!”

“Of course!”

Kyle wouldn’t dare summon the Light God as a witness. The topics he intended to discuss with Black Dragon would surely be blasphemous. If his own deity found out, he would be in serious trouble.

Therefore, he planned to call upon another deity—the Night Goddess Lilith.

“Interesting... As a Light Angel, you actually dare entrust your oath to the Night Goddess.”

Black Dragon’s tone was tinged with amusement. It was well known that Light and Night were opposing divine powers, not exactly mortal enemies but fraught with constant conflict and countless secret grievances.

For a Light Angel to swear by the Night Goddess was tantamount to switching allegiances.

“That’s nothing.”

Kyle dismissed the notion. “The Night Goddess governs secrets, and her professionalism is trustworthy.”

“Besides... if I truly transform into a Dark Angel one day, I’ll inevitably fall into her embrace.”

“Now that you say that, I feel much more at ease.”

Huang Ze said with relief, “As the angel most trusted by the gods, your words show that the Light God’s mark on your soul is beginning to loosen.”

“Fine, let’s use Lilith as the witness. You start first.”

Huang Ze agreed readily.

He consented not because he had great faith in Lilith’s power to hear their oaths, but because the laws in this domain were still strong, making it difficult for divine power to penetrate. So even if they swore by Lilith’s name here, she might not actually hear it.

Sure enough, Kyle prayed sincerely and swore, but there was no response from Lilith.

That made sense—if communication were so easy, Kyle would have contacted his own Light God countless times already and been rescued by the angelic legion.

Oddly, Kyle showed no disappointment at this result, instead urging Black Dragon to proceed.

Huang Ze assumed Kyle sought merely psychological comfort, knowing such oaths would not truly take effect. He followed suit and swore by the Night Goddess’s name that all his answers in the next half hour would be truthful.

“I’ll go first.”

Since the other party was an angel, Black Dragon dispensed with any “ladies first” courtesy and blurted out, “Under your Light God’s command, how many angels are there exactly?”

“I don’t know.”

Kyle thought for a moment, then shook his head.

“Huh? You don’t know?”

Black Dragon expressed strong suspicion. “Who are you trying to fool? As an angel, you don’t even know how many of your kin there are?”

“Looks like the oath you swore earlier was fake. Otherwise, why refuse to answer such a simple question?”

Black Dragon was clearly displeased. The number of angels was probably a top secret in Heaven’s Mountain, so Kyle wouldn’t tell the truth.

“I really don’t know.”

Kyle answered calmly. “Oaths sworn on one’s soul aren’t easily broken. Since I swore it, my answer must be true.”

“Then explain why you don’t know.”

“Because my Lord is an immensely powerful deity whose radiance extends across many planes. He often dispatches angels on missions and has them stationed long-term at key locations.”

Kyle explained, “Our Heaven’s Mountain isn’t like the Xia Kingdom with convenient communication channels or regular censuses that count billions of people...

We’re a very strict little society with a rigid hierarchy. Except for a few archangels at the highest level, no one knows the exact number of our kin.”

Huang Ze found her explanation plausible. Perhaps his question was too specific, and Kyle genuinely had no clear answer, so she replied “I don’t know.”

He adjusted and pressed on, “But you can at least give a rough estimate, right?”

“That counts as the second question. I have to ask you one first before I answer.”

“How is that the second question? It’s the same question! How can you, a proud angel, be so evasive?”

Black Dragon complained.

“...”

Kyle was speechless. Black Dragon kept using her angelic status as an excuse, and she wasn’t sure who was the real scoundrel. She decided not to argue further and, after a moment’s thought, answered,

“The approximate number of angels under my Lord’s command should be between seven hundred and eight hundred.”

I really don’t want to be a dragon.
